Abstract

The main target of this study is to obtain the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) for soil classification using nondestructive geophysical technique, and then to compare with Down hole seismic technique (DHS) as destructive one which has been done before at the same location. Multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) as a nondestructive geophysical technique survey has been carried out at a borehole site ILC-11. Borehole Latitude and longitude coordinates are: 90.1653, 38.64, at Mississippi River Bridge (the east of St. Louis) within the new Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ) in the Granite City 7.5’quadrangle in southwestern of Illinois. The study has obtained the primary wave velocities (vp) and shear-wave velocities (vs).  Down-hole seismic technique (DHS) as a destructive technique showed a very closed results comparing with multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) technique. Survey has given the same soil type according to the (NEHRP) which means that, (MASW) method is an effective tool with great potential for soil classification applications.
