Investigation of Microstructure of Various Heat and Thermo – Mechanical Heat Treatments of AISI 1040 Carbon Steel
الملخص
In the present research work, the effect of deformation on the phase transformation process of 0.4 % carbon steel was investigated. Influence of low and high temperature deformation as well as the cooling rate on the microstructure has been studied. In order to carry this investigation six samples were used. These samples were given different treatment; all samples were heated to the austenite range (850 oc). One sample being water quenched the other was air cooled. Two other samples were deformed, by forging, before being heated to the austenite range. One sample was then air cooled the other sample was water quenched. Two other samples were deformed, by forging, after heating, i.e. Before cooling. One of these two samples was air cooled, the other was water quenched.
The microstructure of these samples was investigated by an optical microscope. It was found that deformation and cooling rate have pronounced effect on the morphology and distribution of transformation products.
